Description

Learn technical aspects of DS4000 and DS5000 storage systems products and how they relate to performance. You will have the opportunity to adjust tunable parameters to achieve optimal performance for a given Input/Output (IO) profile.

It is designed to teach you the skills necessary to analyze input/output from servers and make changes to storage system tunable parameters to optimize performance.

Objectives

An Introduction to IO and Storage Tuning
•    Explain the 40/30/30 rule
•    State the key I/O characteristics
•    Describe disk characteristics that impact performance
•    Configuration Guidelines for IOPS Environments
•    Identify storage system parameters that can reduce the impact of disk latencies
•    State IO characteristics of IOPS environments
•    Identify the benefits of adding disk drives
•    Describe the benefits of command tag queuing
•    Determine logical block addressing based on segment size
•    State how to align IO to a disk by changing segment size
•    Performance Tuning Lab 1 - Spindles and IO Queueing
•    Demonstrate the benefits of disk queuing
•    Demonstrate the benefits of adding drives (spindles) in an IOPS environment
•    Performance Tuning Lab 2 - Segment Size
•    Demonstrate how to configure segment size
•    Demonstrate the benefits of using larger segment sizes in an IOPS environment
•    Guidelines for Throughput Environments
•    Identify storage system parameters that can reduce the impact of disk latencies
•    State characteristics IO of throughput environments
•    Determine logical block addressing based on segment

Participants

This is an intermediate course for:
•    Experienced IBM DS4000 or DS5000 series Sales, IBM Business Partners, and Customers
•    Those in pre-sales technical roles such as FTSS and Systems Engineers
•    Those with more than 2 years hands-on IBM DS4000 or DS5000 series hardware experience

Prerequisite(s)

You should have:
•    Experience with Windows, UNIX, or LAN/WAN fundamentals, TCP/IP
•    2+ Years knowledge or experience with Storage Area Networks (SANs) and Fibre Channel topology
For optimal success in the training, we recommend that you are familiar with systems administration or are power users in UNIX/Linux or Windows environments. (i.e., using Disk Management, creating and mapping disks and files systems)
